Tourism and Porto Tolle
di Dorothy Louise Zinn, Anthropologist

I wanted to investigate tourism development in Porto Tolle, focusing primarily on the perspectives of tourism operators and local administrators. For decades, tourism in Porto Tolle has been limited to short-season beach tourism, but with the decline of clam fishing, it is taking on new importance. There has been strong growth in cycle tourism and nature tourism, with new accommodation facilities opening up. My research led me to wonder to what extent tourism is a new source of prosperity for Porto Tolle, or whether it risks becoming—as the thermoelectric power plant and clam farming did before it—yet another “monoculture” characterizing the local economy.
